Illegitimate child in a royal family?

This is a serious question. Let's suppose there is a baby girl born out of an affair ( let's say the middle ages): the Lady of a court and a King whom is already married. The King already has a son with his wife, the queen. If that son were to die would the daughter who was declared illegitimate be able to inherit the thrown? If not why?
