Movie about a guy's life, talking to devil? 1940's?? PLEASE HELP!?

This is driving me crazy!! A few months ago I saw a movie on PBS, from about the 1940's. It was not a silent film. The opening scene was at the end of his life, talking to the devil. The movie continued on to show his whole life, as a young man he stole his cousin's fiance and ran away with her. They were both very wealthy, and the man was somewhat of a trouble maker... They eventually got married, and had a son. The man's wife left him, and the way he found this out was through a note. For the life of me I can NOT remember ANYTHING about the actual movie (Names, places, director, ect)! Please help if you've seen this movie!!
