Does my son need a visa to go with me to live in another country?

i am trying to get to my husband-to-be who lives in Scotland and i live in the US. i have a son by a previous relationship and he is 3yr old. i know i have to have a visa and passport and i know that he has to have a passport but does he have to have a visa too and if so how or where do i get it?
